Community Lage
Member municipality of the Neuenhaus joint municipality
The municipality of Lage - a small town near the Dutch border in a peaceful, natural landscape. There are around 80 hectares of forest in Lage, mainly in the "Lager Busch", which surrounds the historical ensemble of the "Herrlichkeite Lage" to the north and east. Lage is a popular tourist destination with a historic centre around the ruins of the former castle, the old watermill and the oak avenue.
Plots are available for families in the "Westlicher Baukamp II" residential development area and in the "Alt Lage" residential development area. The building plots are marketed by Grundstücks- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft Grafschaft Bentheim (GGB).
You can find out more on the GGB website.
The municipality of Lage runs the "Abenteuerland" kindergarten and has a primary school and sports fields.
The village community centre, Am Sportplatz 2 in Lage, is the venue for many events and celebrations.
Between 1648 and 1806, Lage was a "Herrlichkeit" - an independent state entity - which belonged neither to the County of Bentheim nor to the Netherlands and to which Emperor Leopold once confirmed that it lay "outside the Empire". At the time, Lage belonged to the lords of Twickel Castle, who stubbornly and successfully insisted on the political and territorial independence of their little country. That was a long time ago, but traces of that time still characterise the townscape today. Dorf-, Burg- und Mühlenfreunde Lage e.V. preserves this cultural asset, maintains it and presents it to the public (e.g. guided tours and grain grinding in the watermill).
